Vintage French 1947 Cabbage Still Life Painting
Age / Period:
Mid-20th century, dated 22-12-47, or December 22, 1947.
Origin / Source:
Sourced in France.
Measurements:
Approximately 15½ inches wide × 12¼ inches tall.
Material:
Oil or oil-based paint on a thin wood panel, likely luan.
Description:
A wonderfully atmospheric French still life depicting a large green cabbage arranged over a red-striped kitchen torchon, with an apple and amber glass bottle set against a deep brown background.
The artist captured the folds and layered leaves of the cabbage with expressive brushwork and touches of impasto, while areas of the natural wood panel remain visible beneath the painted surface. The warm palette and simple kitchen subject matter give the piece an honest, wonderfully lived-in quality.
Signed at the lower right with a partially legible artist’s signature and dated 22-12-47. The artist remains unidentified.
Condition:
Good vintage condition with wear consistent with age.
The natural wood panel shows through in areas, particularly along the foreground, and there is expected surface variation, rubbing, and minor wear associated with an original 1947 painted panel.
