Small Antique French Gilt Brass Oval Portrait Frame
Age / Period:
Antique, likely late 19th to early 20th century
Measurements:
2.75” wide x 4” tall
Maker / Markings / Provenance:
No maker’s mark noted. Sourced as French. Includes a decorative printed portrait insert, not an antique photograph.
Description:
A small antique French gilt brass oval portrait frame with a beaded inner border, raised scrollwork, and a warm gilded surface. The frame has the intimate scale of a personal tabletop portrait, made to hold a small photograph or keepsake image rather than command a room.
The glass shows a slightly irregular, wavy quality, consistent with older glass made before modern float glass became standard. The back appears to be a later replacement, but the frame itself has the surface, detail, and age character of an older gilt brass portrait frame.
What makes this piece is its scale and presence. It is small enough to tuck almost anywhere, but the gilding, oval form, and old glass give it the feeling of something kept with intention.
Condition:
Very good antique condition with no condition issues noted. The glass is intact, the frame is sound, and the easel back functions well. The fabric-covered back appears to be a later replacement. The gilded surface shows warm age and light surface variation.
Historical or Decorative Notes:
Small oval portrait frames were made for intimate personal display: family photographs, cabinet portraits, or keepsake images placed on writing desks, dressing tables, shelves, or bedside surfaces. The beaded trim, scroll detail, gilt brass surface, and wavy glass are consistent with late 19th to early 20th century decorative portrait frames.
Use & Styling:
Use with a small family photograph on a desk, library shelf, bedside table, bathroom ledge, or entry surface. It works beautifully beside clothbound books, leather volumes, folded linen, a small tray for keys or change, or gathered objects where it feels deliberately placed rather than tucked away.
