Antique French Riverside Landscape Painting in Gilt & Painted Palmette Frame
An antique French oil painting depicting a quiet riverside landscape with trees, still water, a small bridge, and a shaded bank beneath a softened sky.
This piece is unsigned and painted on relined canvas, suggesting it was once valued enough to be preserved. The back shows notable age, with old canvas, aged wood, nails/tacks, hand-built construction, and a faint handwritten marking on the frame that appears to read “palmette” or similar.
The frame is a beautiful part of the piece, with a restrained gilt and painted finish, palmette-style corner decoration, and a painted inner surround that softens the look of the artwork. The back of the frame appears older in construction, while the gilt front may have been refreshed, reworked, or added later.
The reverse retains an old Marseille label reading, “Georges Caors, 15 Rue Moustier, Marseille, Expert près les tribunaux,” suggesting it may have once passed through the hands of a Marseille framer, gallery, or art expert.
There is no current hanging hardware attached. It appears this piece may have previously rested directly on a nail in the wall, though it would also display beautifully leaned on a mantle, shelf, or layered into a collected gallery wall.
