Description:

An antique French torchon, or dish towel, with a natural cream linen ground, classic red center stripe, hand-embroidered HA monogram, and hanging loops sewn at both ends. Two are available, each sold individually.

The cloth has the generous scale and woven texture associated with old French working kitchen linens. These were practical household textiles, used for drying dishes, covering bread, lining baskets, wrapping provisions, and keeping close at hand in the kitchen.

I chose these for their useful form and clean visual strength: the warm linen ground, the red woven stripe, the small monogram, and the simple construction that makes French household textiles so enduring. They have enough presence to style beautifully, but they still feel honest and usable.

Condition:

Good antique textile condition with age and wear consistent with use. The fabric shows softening, creasing, fold lines, light discoloration, small marks, laundering wear, and natural irregularities from age, storage, and household use. Hanging loops are present at both ends. 

Use & Styling:

Use in a kitchen, folded over an oven handle, hung from a hook, layered in a pantry, lining a bread basket, or folded under ironstone, copper, crocks, cutting boards, and old wood. The red stripe also pairs especially well with toile, ticking, creamware, dark furniture, and collected French country pieces.
