Regular price $225.00

Age / Period:

Late 19th to early 20th century, circa 1890–1920, with a later hand-added or replaced top

Origin / Source:

Sourced in Paris, France

Wood with veneered surfaces, turned wooden knobs, metal nails, bun feet, and paper label fragment inside

Interior paper label fragment reads “République Française” and “Manufactures de l’État.”

This appears to be repurposed French state-manufacture paper or packaging material incorporated into the piece, rather than a furniture maker’s mark. The label is attached to the inside top section, and the top appears to have been added or replaced by hand at a later point.

Description:

An antique French miniature tabletop chest with three working drawers, warm veneered surfaces, turned wooden knobs, small bun feet, and possibly a later hand-added or replaced top.

The piece has the form of a proper little chest, but in a useful tabletop scale. The front is tightly composed, with three drawers set between simple vertical stiles, a raised lower rail, and small rounded feet. The wood has a deep reddish-brown tone with darkened edges, rubbed surfaces, small veneer losses, and the kind of mellow wear that only comes from handling and age.

I chose this piece for its scale, color, and usefulness. It has a wonderful balance between furniture form and everyday function. The veneer gives it a more finished, furniture-like presence, while the varying knobs, nail construction, uneven drawer fit, and altered top keep it from feeling too polished. It feels old, useful, and personal.

Condition:

Good antique condition with visible age, use, and skilled alteration.

There are small veneer losses, surface scratches, darkening, nail marks, drawer variation, wear to the feet, and uneven handmade details throughout. The top appears to have been added or replaced by hand at a later point. The drawers open and close. The bun feet are attached with antique nails. Sold as found.

Historical or Decorative Notes:

Veneer is a traditional furniture-making surface, used to give a piece a more refined wood finish over a secondary wood structure.

Miniature chests like this can be associated with tabletop storage, apprentice work, children’s furniture, sewing use, or small decorative furniture forms. Without documentation, this piece should not be called a salesman sample, but it does have the appeal of miniature furniture with working drawers and true utility.

Use & Styling:

A beautiful small storage piece for a guest bath, writing desk, dressing table, teacher’s desk, or bedside surface. Use it for cotton rounds, swabs, jewelry, tags, stamps, wax seals, ribbons, paper goods, or little guest necessities. It would be especially good on marble, beside old linen, antique books, a small vase of flowers, ironstone, pearls, or handwritten paper.
