Antique French Romanticism Landscape Oil Painting, Signed Lantonnet

Regular price $345.00

A timeworn antique French oil painting depicting a quiet riverside landscape with figures, boats, distant hills, trees, and a small bridge along the water.

This piece is signed "Lantonnet" in the lower right and painted on canvas attached to a wooden stretcher with nails/tacks. The back shows significant age, including one visible repair. The canvas is not fully intact all the way around the stretcher, and the painting has visible wear throughout.

The composition carries the feeling of French Romanticism, an artistic movement that gained popularity in France during the early 19th century and flourished through the mid-1800s. In Romantic landscape painting, nature often becomes the larger presence, with small human figures placed within a vast, atmospheric setting. Here, the figures along the riverbank feel quiet and secondary to the sweeping trees, distant hills, soft sky, and open water beyond them.

A beautiful piece for a mantel, living room wall, or gathering space where the home naturally slows down. Its quiet countryside scene brings a sense of tranquility and pairs especially well with antique wood, books, linen, brass, and other collected pieces.
