Antique Wooden Molding Plane
Age / Period:
Early 20th century
Measurements:
9.5” long x 1.75” deep x 3.5” tall at the body; approximately 6” tall to the top of the iron/blade
Description:
An antique wooden molding plane with a warm worn body, original wedge, and metal iron still in place. The wood has a darkened, hand-worn surface with softened edges, visible marks, and the kind of honest use that gives an old workshop tool sculptural presence.
Condition:
Good antique condition with age-related wear throughout. The wood shows surface marks, scratches, darkening, small scuffs, and wear consistent with use. The metal iron/blade shows oxidation and age.
Historical or Decorative Notes:
Wooden molding planes were used to cut decorative profiles into wood for furniture, cabinetry, trim, and architectural work before modern routers became common. Each plane was made for a particular cut or profile, with the iron held in place by a wedge and adjusted by hand.
Use & Styling:
Display on a bookshelf, library shelf, brick ledge, desk, or workshop surface where the worn wood can be seen up close. It works beautifully in a gathered vignette beside old books, ironstone, folded linens, baskets, or worn textiles.
Lay it flat, prop it slightly, or place it beside books like a small visual bookend. It is the kind of unexpected object that gives a shelf history, warmth, and a quiet conversation piece.
