Antique French Green Glazed Redware Pitcher with Honey Glazed Interior
An antique French green glazed redware pitcher, sourced in France from an old private collection of early regional pottery.
This piece is hand-thrown in warm red earthenware with a deep olive-green exterior glaze, visible throwing rings, an unglazed terracotta foot, and a beautifully darkened base from age and use. The interior is the surprise - a warm honey-yellow glaze, a detail commonly seen on older glazed red earthenware where the inside was finished differently from the exterior.
There is wonderful evidence of the hand in this piece, including the almost thumbprint-like impression inside where the handle was attached to the body. Around the rim near the handle, there is an old mature chip, with darkened terracotta showing through underneath, giving clear evidence of age rather than fresh damage.
A beautiful old French pottery piece for open shelving, a collected kitchen, dried lavender, utensils, or simply as a sculptural piece of antique provincial pottery.
