A wonderfully expansive 1938 panoramic photograph capturing the students and faculty of Woburn High School in Massachusetts.
Hundreds of individual faces stretch across the full yard-long composition, arranged in rows before the school building. The formal clothing, hairstyles, and expressions create a remarkable portrait of American school life just before World War II.
The handwritten identification of Dorothy Adams adds a particularly personal element, transforming the photograph from an anonymous school image into a surviving piece of one person’s history.

Known among collectors as “yard-long” photographs, these elongated panoramas were created to document large groups that could not be captured effectively in a standard photographic format. Schools, military units, factories, civic organizations, and professional gatherings commonly commissioned them during the early decades of the 20th century.
Special panoramic cameras slowly rotated during the exposure, allowing hundreds of people to appear within one continuous image. Today, these photographs are collected both as historical records and for their unmistakable graphic presence.
This example is especially compelling because the school, location, year, and an individual associated with the photograph remain identified.
Condition:
Good vintage condition with overall toning, fading, surface marks, and scattered wear consistent with a photograph dating to 1938.
The black-painted wooden frame shows rubbing, scratches, small losses, and age-related wear. The reverse has a corrugated cardboard backing secured with small nails. Clear tape has been added around portions of the backing as a later reinforcement.
A hanging cord is present, although the backing and hanging arrangement are older, non-archival additions and should be inspected before installation.
