Description:

A beautifully executed French still life painted directly onto a wood panel, depicting ripe peaches and cherries gathered in a bowl alongside pottery, a copper candlestick, and a striped kitchen torchon.

The artist handled light especially well, with consistent directional shading across the fruit, pottery, textile, and copper. Small details - including the hint of green verdigris on the candlestick and the folds of the red-striped cloth - give the composition unusual depth for its petite scale.

Warm, rich, and wonderfully moody, it has the feeling of an old French kitchen filled with dark wood, collected pottery, and generations of everyday use.

Signed at the lower right; the signature is partially legible but the artist remains unidentified.

Condition:

Good vintage condition with wear consistent with age.

The texture of the original wood panel remains visible beneath the painted surface. Minor surface and edge wear may be present, consistent with an older unframed work.

Use & Styling:

The perfect little painting for a collected kitchen. I would prop it against a backsplash behind a bowl of fruit, tuck it among cookbooks with a small piece of ironstone in front, or place it inside a pantry as an unexpected bit of art.
