Vintage Primitive Wall Cupboard with Wire-Mesh Door

Description:

A characterful vintage wall cupboard with a wire-mesh door, softly aged cream paint, and traces of an earlier red-painted surface showing through along the edges and worn areas.

The narrow proportions are balanced by fluted architectural trim, a small white knob, and an open gallery shelf at the top. Inside, a single wooden shelf divides the cupboard into two useful compartments while the fine wire mesh keeps the contents partially visible.

Its handmade construction and layered painted surface give it the warmth and individuality of an old country kitchen piece.

Historical or Decorative Notes:

Wire-screened cupboards developed from practical food-storage furniture designed to allow air circulation while helping protect pantry goods from insects. Larger versions are often associated with pie safes and food cupboards, while smaller wall-mounted examples were used for spices, medicines, household supplies, or everyday kitchen necessities.

This compact cupboard borrows from that utilitarian tradition, combining ventilated storage with decorative fluted trim and a useful open shelf above.

Condition:

Good vintage condition with wear consistent with age and former household use.

The cream-painted surface shows rubbing, scratches, staining, small losses, and scattered areas where the earlier red-painted layer is visible. The interior has discoloration, marks, and accumulated surface wear.

The wire mesh, hinges, knob, and door remain present, and the hardware operates properly.

There is no installed hanging hardware. Two old screw holes remain near the bottom from where the cupboard was previously secured directly through the wood and into a wall. Appropriate mounting hardware will need to be added or the cupboard should be professionally secured before use.
